This is a beautiful and super useful old horsehair work brush made by the Phoenix Brush Company

and thereafter religious themes and motifs were a consistent element in his work

S Government.) But I was delighted to then open it and find all or almost all of its original contents packed neatly inside, most never opened or used (just two of the bandage boxes are empty, though I believe one of those two bandages is present, neatly rolled up but not returned to the box.)
