It is the second hardest natural mineral, ranking 9 on the Mohs scale, just below diamond. The color of blue sapphires is caused by the presence of trace amounts of titanium (Ti) and iron (Fe), which replace some of the aluminum atoms in the crystal lattice. These titanium and iron ions absorb certain
